Teeth Whitening Treatments
Teeth whitening is the removal of stains and discolorations from the enamel and dentin. The outer layer of the tooth is enamel, and beneath the enamel is dentin. Enamel is thin and typically much lighter in color, while dentin is darker in color and makes up the bulk of the tooth. Enamel can be discolored over time simply from age, but also from outside sources like coffee, tea, tobacco, and other foods and beverages. Also, as we age, our enamel thins, causing more dentin to show through, making the overall appearance of the tooth look darker. Whitening your teeth removes these stains and discolorations, giving you a whiter, brighter smile.
Take-Home Whitening Trays
What makes over the counter teeth whitening kits so popular is that they can be done at home. These trays are available for both sensitive and non-sensitive teeth. Each teeth whitening kit consists of impression trays and teeth whitening gels. These "take-home trays" are engineered for anyone to use, and come with instructions on how to perform the procedure yourself. Although they can be a convenient option, obtaining great results can take longer than other treatments and they don’t always work well for deep stains. These trays are custom made to go over your teeth and whiten your teeth through a special gel that is found on the inside of the trays.
These trays, once made for you, can then be taken home as a teeth whitening kit, along with the guidelines given by our dentist. The time period that they must remain on your teeth can vary according to your teeth whitening needs.
How they Work
Custom whitening trays are made of a clear plastic that comfortably adjust when inserted. A small dollop of a gel is inserted in each tray, giving them their whitening properties. The gel consists of a hydrogen peroxide solution that actively whitens the enamel of the teeth.
After they have been used and are taken off, they need to be cleaned with a Q-tip or a cloth, and rinsed. This makes them ready to be used again. It is not recommended to use them for at least another day, after each application.
These whitening trays can be used several times to achieve the desired results. Our dentist can further advice on how many times they should be used in your case.
Teeth whitening is a safe, comfortable way to get a bright, white smile. Results and treatment time may vary depending on the level of staining and whiteness desired. Crowns, bridges, fillings, and veneers will not whiten. We recommend visiting our dentist for a prewhitening consult so that he can help you choose the professional option that best fits your needs.
